The local gulf waters are excellent for all kinds of cruising, ranging from day sails to the west coast where there are safe and interesting destinations for extended stays, to overnight stops down the east coast when in transit to Kangaroo Island. The swell from the Southern Ocean is substantially blocked by the island, and while locally generated waves can be significant in bad weather, the gulf waters generally provide safe and easy cruising opportunities.
VHF coverage is good everywhere in the gulf. Mobile phone coverage is generally good near population centres, but is usually poor or non-existent in the middle of the gulf, and may be patchy away from townships.
